Mountain Top Emmaus is a non-denominational community in Hayesville North Carolina, striving to live out the Biblical command to love God, each other and our neighbors. This means worshipping and following Jesus Christ not only through our words, but also through the lives we lead. The Gospel is ultimately about humanity being restored to God’s community. Only through practicing community will individuals grow fully in the grace and knowledge to be found in Jesus. Furthermore, it is through community that a fragmented world can best witness the power of the Gospel and the nature of God’s work. As a culture of confession, transformation, friendship, forgiveness, justice, power, and love springs up in the lives of normal people, those who don’t know Christ will be compelled to ask: "what is happening?"
No matter what your story is, God has written it. Whether you've come
from a diverse and rough background, or a relatively easy one - God is
the ultimate author of your story. Mountain Top Emmaus values focusing on the
heart above everything else in attempting to accomplish our goal as a
Our vision is to be a community of grace-filled people, empowered for community transformation and new church formation, so that the Gospel is faithfully transferred from person to person and generation to generation. As Jesus Christ works in and through us to fulfill our mission and pursue our vision, we expect to see results in three areas: Community Transformation, New Church Formation, Next Generation Empowerment.
Our mission at Mountain Top Emmaus is clear and simple: to make God known. Like our mission, our strategy for accomplishing this is equally simple - we strive to make God known by living in a way that accurately represents his impact in our lives. Every word we speak, every action we take, should be a testament to how God has entered our lives and changed them for the better. By living this way, we can make a tremendous impact even when doing the smallest thing. We aim to glorify God by making disciples through the gospel of Jesus Christ. God’s mission and the mission of His Church are inseparably linked. If God’s mission is to be glorified through the redemption and reconciliation of a people, the Church’s mission must orient around the glory of God and seek to glorify Him through redemption and reconciliation.
God’s plan for the beginning of Mountain Top Emmaus would occur through those who attended Walks in Nashville or Cleveland Tennessee. Those who were once pilgrims on Walk #3 in Cleveland Tennessee became renewed in Christ and worked early Walks to Emmaus that were held at the Hinton Center.
Prior to Mountain Top Emmaus, however, it was known as Mountain Top (Methodist) Cursillo. Six Cursillo Walks were held at the Hinton Center. Cursillo soon dissolved and through God’s plan, this became known as the Walk to Emmaus. The Upper Room in Nashville, Tennessee created the name “The Walk to Emmaus” by planning the design and the materials for all Walks. It is through this relationship with the Upper Room, that these materials are still used today for Mountain Top Emmaus Walks.
In 1980 the Walk to Emmaus #7 was the first Walk held at the Hinton Center under the new name. Thus Mountain Top Emmaus was born and each Walk since brings the Lord Jesus to appear to the many pilgrims who attend the Walks. There are at least two from the first Walks to Emmaus who continue to serve in the background of Walks today.
Also, in 1980, the Board of Directors for Mountain Top Emmaus became God’s instrument in planning and making decisions that would secure the future for the Walk to Emmaus. It is through their efforts and decision-making that all future Boards of Directors have benefited and have continued to be guided by God’s Holy Spirit as they plan, make decisions and serve our beloved Mountain Top Emmaus Community.
